Leather porter’s chair, English, 19th century. Classic shape, buttoned interior, leather showing signs of age on arms and around the back but otherwise very sturdy. Two little doors underneath for the porter’s items (or for small children to hide in!). Originally used as chairs for hall porters to sit in while they kept watch at the doors of grand homes and palaces, they were later used for porters of hotels to keep them sheltered and to be able to sit whilst not in attendance to a visitor.
